Tree Pose for Kids: Balance, Breathing and Fun Through Yoga
26.11.25
If you’re looking for simple ways to support your child’s wellbeing, focus, and fitness, children’s yoga is a brilliant place to start. One of the most loved (and effective) poses in kids yoga is Tree Pose. Not only is it fun to try, but it also helps children develop strength, focus, and confidence from the inside out.
In this post, we’ll explore what Tree Pose is, why it’s great for children’s development, and how your little one can try it at home, with a little help from Hanu!
What is Tree Pose?
Tree Pose, or Vrksasana, is a balancing pose where you stand on one leg like a tall, steady tree. In children’s yoga, it’s often turned into a game of imagination, growing roots into the ground, stretching branches high, and swaying gently in the breeze.
While it may seem simple, it’s doing a lot in the background. Tree Pose helps children:
-
Develop physical balance and coordination
-
Strengthen their legs, core, and posture
-
Improve concentration and body awareness
-
Practice calm breathing while staying still
-
Build emotional confidence through movement
Plus, it’s just really fun to do, especially when kids imagine themselves as jungle trees like Hanu!
How to Do Tree Pose with Kids
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to introduce Tree Pose during your child’s yoga time:
-
Stand Tall Like a Mountain - Ask your child to stand with their feet together, arms by their sides. Encourage them to feel grounded “Like a strong mountain!”. Optional cue: “Take a deep breath in… and feel your feet root into the ground.”
-
Lift One Foot - Gently guide them to lift one foot and place it on the inside of the opposite leg, either below or above the knee (never directly on the knee joint). Balance tip: Hold onto a wall, chair, or your hand at first. Wobbling is part of the fun!
-
Grow Your Branches - Once they’re steady, ask them to bring their hands together at their heart… then stretch their arms up like tree branches! Encourage imagination: “Are your branches still and tall, or swaying in the jungle wind?”
-
Breathe and Balance - Invite your child to take 3–5 deep breaths while holding the pose. Help them focus by picking a spot to look at — “your jungle focus point.”
-
Switch Sides - Slowly come back down and switch legs to stay balanced on both sides. Tip: Celebrate effort over perfection. Smiles and wobbles are all part of the process.
Why Tree Pose is So Powerful for Children
Tree Pose teaches more than physical balance, it supports emotional balance too.
Children who practice balancing poses like this learn how to pause, breathe, and try again. That resilience shows up outside yoga time too, whether they’re learning to focus in school, stay calm during tricky emotions, or find confidence in their body.
It’s also a brilliant “reset” activity during the day, just 60 seconds of Tree Pose can help a child re-centre and feel calm.
